Tamanu oil comes from the plant species Calophyllum inophyllum. The tree is called many different things such as the “poon” in India, the “feta’u” in Tonga, the “bintangor” tree in Malaysia or the “ati” or “tamanu” tree in Tahiti. However, this tree can be found in South East Asia, Australasia, Madagascar, East Africa, the Pacific Islands, the West Indes and South America.
The tree is an evergreen hardwood which flowers twice a year and in time produces round fruit the size of an apricot. The fruit yields a large nut which is where the oil comes from. The nut is originally composed of whitish yellow kernel. The nut is then dried for a month or so and the kernel turns into greenish amber coloured oil. Tamanu oil be easily absorbed into the skin and has a rich nutty fragrance.
Tamanu oil boasts of anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant properties. It has a soothing effect on the skin and can be used on mucous membranes. It also improves the skins elasticity and firmness. Tamanu oil can be used on scars and stretch marks as it is completely natural. However, it is made from a nut so those with less severe nut allergies should test it on their wrist before using. Other things that tamanu oil can be used for:
